Meet Iida Suutarla - the fashion designer behind Ui Swim
A young designer with a mission
Iida Suutarla, a young woman and designer from Helsinki, Finland, has always been captivated by the world of fashion and the art of problem-solving through design. The path of becoming a fashion designer was clear to her from a very young age.
In her work, Iida has consistently been fascinated by the fusion of pleasing aesthetics with practical functionality, as well as the ability to create clothing that fulfills genuine needs. She firmly believes in the power of strong collaboration and actively listens to diverse perspectives throughout the design process.
Iida pursued her design education at LAB University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Design in Lahti, Finland. During her time as a student, she worked as a freelance designer and stylist, driven by her desire to understand the unique requirements of various consumers. Her journey took her across borders to Sweden, where she collaborated with fashion brands for a bit over a year, gaining valuable experience and insights into both countries’ fashion scenes.
The birth of Ui Swim - an idea realized
The idea of a swimwear collection was born shortly after Iida graduated in the spring of 2022. It was during this time that she realized a gap in the market for swimwear that flawlessly combined flattering fits, clean design, versatility, and top-notch materials. She searched high and low but couldn’t find pieces that truly embodied all these elements. That’s when she asked herself, ”Why not create it myself?”
Iida embarked on a mission to create swimwear that empowers individuals, instilling them with confidence and comfort both in and out of the water. She devoted herself to a meticulous process of consumer research, fabric sourcing, and pattern making, ensuring that each Ui Swim piece would enhance the natural beauty of the wearer.
Inspired by the Finnish archipelago
Drawing inspiration from her Finnish background and her upbringing in the beautiful archipelago of Helsinki, where water played a significant role in her life, Iida blended her personal experiences with her design philosophy.
”I firmly believe that swimwear should not only be functional but also radiate clean aesthetics, allowing individuals to feel good and effortlessly express their personal style. My goal is to create pieces that stand the test of time, where the wearer can feel the care and attentiveness I pour into every design,” shares Iida.
